No one likes an upset stomach.  At our office we get people complaining of stomach and gastrointestinal (GI) complaints all the time.  We would like to give you some natural remedies for GI distress.  This applies to common things like heartburn, nausea, pain and bloating.

Probiotics

Probiotics are supplements that contain healthy bacteria for the gut and aide in digestion.  By providing good bacteria they can provide relief for diarrhea and can also relieve symptoms of IBS.   This is by far the number one supplement to take to help with stomach ailments.  In order to get a good colony, make sure your supplement has 10 or more strains of bacteria, and that there is a broad range of types of bacteria.

For Good quality supplements you only need to take one to two capsules per day and you need to be consistent.  It takes a minimum of 15 days to cultivate a good colony.  If you are taking a supplement and find that you are getting diarrhea you might be taking too much, drop back to 1 or 2 capsules every other day.  Also, taking probiotics after taking a course of antibiotics is very important to replenish the gut flora, because unfortunately antibiotics kill not only the bad bacteria but the good as well.

Peppermint oil and peppermint oil capsules

Lots of recent research has been showing that peppermint oil can help lessen the pain and bloating associated with IBS.  Clinically speaking, peppermint oil is recommended for its anti-nausea benefits and soothing effects on the gastric lining and colon because of its ability to reduce muscle spasms.

Ginger

Ginger is great to help ease a stomach ache.  Cutting up some ginger root and putting it in a glass of boiled water and drinking it as a tea is a nice comforting way to use this.  It helps to reduce inflammation in the intestinal track promoting digestion and easing stomach cramps.

Almonds

Almonds are packed full of calcium, which is why it can be an effective treatment for heartburn.  Calcium helps to counteract the effect of excess acid in the stomach, making almonds a great natural remedy.

Chiropractic Adjustments

Lastly, the most important thing anyone can do for GI issues is to get adjusted regularly by a chiropractor.  A specific chiropractic adjustment helps balance the nervous system, which can be one of the main factors causes the distress.  If you are currently seeing a chiropractor, awesome!  If you are not, give us a call.  We would love to see if we can help.
